Direct Support Professional Job Description Direct support professionals (DSPs) are people who work directly with Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities with the aim of assisting them to integrate with their communities.
A DSP is a hero responsible to provide direct services and support to the individual, including, but not limited to:
assisting in maintaining a clean, safe living environment, meal preparation and completion of various household tasks; supervising, teaching, and assisting the individual in every aspect of their life, with the goals of fostering increased independence, choice and empowerment.
A DSP may provide supports to a Individual at home, work, school, and other community places.
A DSP is also an advocate, helping people in communicating needs, self-expression, and goals as well as assuring justice and equality in community life.
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED, Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record with less than 6 points.
Direct Support Professional Specific Job Duties Respect individual rights and confidentiality.
Be a role model, promote positive relationships with individuals and your co-workers.
Read, know, and implement organizational policies and procedures.
Read, know, and implement Individual's IP and Behavior Plan.
Remain alert to individuals' behavior/physical changes and notify immediate supervisor.
Assist the individuals in maintaining a clean, neat and safe home environment.
Help with daily living skills such as cooking, housekeeping, personal hygiene, laundry, etc.
Assist with medication administration and other healthcare duties as assigned, such as medical appointments and healthcare follow up.
Transport and accompany individuals in their communities, connecting them with opportunities to build relationships with people who share similar interests.
Other community activities include grocery shopping, going to fairs, festivals, the movies, restaurants, clothes shopping, etc.
